Alexander Solhi Sanctions

IRMA ARRENDONDO VS ALI BAWAB - Ali Alexander Solhi is stated by the judge in this ruling to be the attorney for plaintiff. This representation is also reflected in online court records available from the Los Angeles County court.

Ali Alexander Solhi, Esq. represented the plaintiff. Per the tentative ruling this is what happened:

The defendant served discovery for Mr. Solhi's client to answer. The discovery consisted of a request for documents and answers to written questions.

Normally, answers are due within thirty days. This would have been July 2017.

However, defendant's attorney had to grant attorney Solhi's client an extension of time.

Then a second extension of time was granted.

Finally, the defense attorney had to write to Alexander Solhi demanding a response.

Still nothing was forthcoming from the Alexander Solhi law firm.

As a result motions to compel were filed.

The judge found that attorney Alexander Solhi was engaged in a misuse of the discovery process and issued sanctions of $580.

To make sure Alexander Solhi was sanctioned, the judge sanctioned him personally - and also sanctioned his law firm - the Alexander Solhi Professional Corporation.

Attorney Solhi's client was also given twenty days to respond to all discovery without objection.

Note: The situation was apparently so bad that Attorney Alexander Solhi did not bother to oppose the motion for sanctions against him. He made no attempt to justify his actions or to explain why the court should not personally sanction him.

Questions and Answers

Would you hire Ali Alexander Solhi to be your attorney?

There is a reason why the judge sanctioned Alexander Solhi. Not just personally, but also his law firm. If it was just a client problem with the client not answering discovery then that could have been explained and only the client would have been sanctioned.

In our opinion, when a judge evaluates the situation and decides to sanction both an attorney individually, and also their law firm, that is a red flag about the attorney. It is apparent Mr. Alexander Solhi was communicating and probably making representations which caused the defendant to grant multipe extensions of time for the discovery responses. It is a problem when what the attorney does then leads to personal sanctions against the attorney.
